WWE Is Using A.J. Styles vs. Roman Reigns To Turn Usos Heel, But More Is At Stake

Is Roman Reigns turning heel? It’s very tough to tell. WWE seems to be sure that the John Cena model will work with Reigns, and the new catchphrase plays toward that school of thought. It has indeed made WWE numerous boatloads of money over the past decade, and Cena is about as close to being a household name as you’re going to get these days. I’ll be the first to admit that Reigns is good, but he’s not ‘the guy’ WWE wants him to be. Will he be that guy in five years? Maybe, but just like Cena, he has to take the right path to get there.

With the debut of the as yet unnamed Bullet Club/Balor Club in the current form of Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows, that might be changing. I would argue that WWE has noticed that The Usos aren’t getting the kind of reactions they were eliciting two years ago when they were reviving the tag division. I would also say that they know that people want to cheer Anderson and Gallows, at least for now.

So what’s the outcome? Well, that’s a tough one. The only thing that seems obvious is that Jimmy and Jey are going to turn. The question is how? If they turn on Reigns, they’ll get cheered. That’s what WWE may be planning, and that will definitely backfire. If they defend him, it will be met with some boos and indifference.

Maybe it won’t matter much, because they will be taking on Doc and Machine Gun this Monday on RAW. The Usos will be de facto bad guys, and maybe they’ll play to it and let it happen organically. The Usos need the change. Even if Reigns doesn’t go full heel they can still come to his aid and it will work.

But will the crowd react the way WWE wants them to when Gallows and Anderson turn on AJ Styles? How do they want the crowd to react? Is there any way that this goes in any direction, as it pertains to crowd response, that WWE is hoping it does? The odds suggest not.
