Ryback vs. Kalisto And United States Title Relegated To Kickoff Show Again

After his disappointment with where he was positioned at WrestleMania, Ryback has once again been slotted into the free match before the paid show begins. In good news for him, signs are pointing to him winning the United States Championship this Sunday night, so that could be a silver lining for him.

The US Title picture shrunk significantly once John Cena was no longer champion, which was obviously going to happen even though many people were in denial and truly believed that his tenure as champ was going to raise the belt’s profile and prestige. The United States Championship was important because Cena was holding it, not because WWE wanted to make the belt important. It was all a gimmick to give him something fresh to do. And it was great, but it doesn’t extend beyond the superficial.

Alberto Del Rio took the title from Cena upon his return in December in disappointingly easy and anticlimactic fashion, and in the process he was given credit for putting Cena on the shelf for what’s going to turn out to be about six months. Del Rio soon lost the title to current champ Kalisto in a shocking change, and they traded the belt a couple times before Kalisto won the final bout and held onto the title.

Ryback came calling in time for the WrestleMania kickoff but failed in his bid to win the title. The belt has fallen down a rabbit hole of importance to the point where Kalisto barely even appears on RAW and Ryback has barely been seen on TV at all until very recently.

It’s a shame that WWE has taken so much away from the United States Title. Hopefully they’ll give it a shot at having a resurgence, but the obvious did occur in the end. No Cena, no importance.
