WWE Angers Fans by Having Bill Goldberg Defeat Kevin Owens for WWE Universal Championship at 'Fastlane'

By Jason Fletcher

At WWE Fastlane on Sunday night, the Raw brand had an opportunity to set itself up for WrestleMania 33 with a solid pay-per-view. There were intriguing matchups across the board that really could’ve put the show in great position, but the creative team failed miserably once again.

With an opportunity to prove Braun Strowman’s dominance, they instead had the big man lose to Roman Reigns who continues to get pushed as a main event option despite the WWE Universe having no interest in seeing him succeed.

The creative team also thought it was a good time to have Charlotte’s undefeated streak at pay-per-views end at the hands of Bayley, Rusev get destroyed by the Big Show, and, worst of all, Kevin Owens lose the WWE Universal Championship to Goldberg in a match that didn’t even last 30 seconds.

While Goldberg is obviously a big name and helps to draw some casual viewers, he’s 50 years old and doesn’t have the ability to have a match longer than a couple of minutes. Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 33 was going to draw the same amount of viewers with, or without, it being for the WWE Universal Championship.

Now, there will almost certainly be buildup towards a Kevin Owens vs. Chris Jericho at WrestleMania after Jericho’s appearance was what distracted Owens on Sunday night and allowed Goldberg to hit a spear followed by a jackhammer. But having the two former best friends battle it out with no WWE Universal Championship involved will almost certainly cost the match some interest.

Hope you wrestling fans out there are ready for a main event at WrestleMania 33 that features two over-the-hill guys on their last legs in WWE because that’s what we’re going to see.
