January 17 Purdue Sports News

There are a lot of quick updates in the Purdue sports world. None of these stories merit a full-blown write-up so here’s the basics of what you need to know to keep up with Boilermakers athletics:
- Kawaan Short has opted to return for his senior year. The talented defensive lineman was projected by some as a first day pick in this April’s NFL draft. His return will mean that Purdue will have a rock solid anchor to help stuff the run up the middle and put pressure on the quarterback. Short had 6.5 sacks last season.
- Ex-Purdue basketball commit Derek Willis will announce his college decision Friday. All signs point to a Kentucky commitment. Willis is a 2013 (junior in high school) four star forward with high skill level and good athleticism. He has offers from Purdue, Indiana, Louisville, and Kentucky.
- Purdue takes on Iowa at home on Tuesday night. If the Boilers want to even entertain thoughts of competing for a Big Ten title, games like this must be won. Purdue narrowly beat the Hawkeyes 79-76 in Iowa City when they they first met this season on December 28, 2011.
- Purdue had another QB visitor on campus last weekend — Robert Gregory out of Chicago Simeon. The 6-2 dual threat quarterback is also considering Minnesota. Purdue already has 3 scholarships verbally accepted by QB recruits to enroll next fall and one preferred walk-on QB who has enrolled this semester. Keep in mind that with the exception of Austin Appleby, all of these recruits may be able to switch positions.
