Purdue Torches Nebraska with Hot Shooting (Game Notes)

Unlike the 1 for 23 cold streak against Michigan State on Sunday, Purdue shot with confidence and attacked the basket. The Boilermakers totaled 83 points to Nebraska’s 65 and shot 54.5% from the field.

Here are the game notes:

Against Illinois, I thought Hummel had his best game of the year. Well, his strong play continues and you can argue that he played his best against the Huskers. He scored 29 points, grabbed 7 boards, and blocked two shots. He scored in a variety of ways, whether it was a spot up three, a mid-range jumper, or put-back off an offensive rebound.
There were no doubts about DJ Byrd’s focus after his one game suspension. He came out on fire and scored 15 points off the bench — all on three point shots (5-8). He also played hard defense and grabbed four boards.
Lewis Jackson scored 13 points, including numerous drives to the basket where he was able to beat his man and contort his body for a layup. It’s an incredibly difficult shot, but he’s done it so many times that it’s become expected. He also handed out five assists.
Terone Johnson had a great all-around game. You can argue he had his best game of the year for filling up the stat sheet: 11 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal. Not to mention, he had an efficient 5-7 shooting, although he only made 1 of 4 FTs.
Ryne Smith shot 4 of 8 from behind the arc for 12 points. As usual, he was pesky on defense and made life difficult for Husker shooters.
The rest: Anthony Johnson had a team second best 4 assists. Travis Carroll had 6 rebounds in 24 minutes.
Club Tril: Jacob Lawson, Sandi Marcius, John Hart, and Neal Beshears all played 1 minute (if you round up), but did not have any other official stats. Dru Anthrop blew his opportunity at Club Tril by getting a steal.

Purdue travels to Ann Arbor next to play Michigan on Saturday at 6 pm. It will be a tough road game, but if Purdue shoots like they did against Nebraska, they’ll certainly have a chance.
