Is the Dallas Cowboy’s season already over? The team which was the favorite by many pundits to advance to the Super Bowl is now resembling a team angling for a top 10 draft pick in April. On paper, this team looked like one that would be leading the NFL in scoring, the defense was loaded with playmakers but as they say, they don’t play the game on paper. In reality, this is a team loaded with problems.

Twice Dallas held the lead in the game against the Chicago Bears, and twice they allowed Jay Cutler to get the Bears right back into the game. In fact, Jay Cutler looked spectacular Sunday completing 21 of 29 passes for 277 yards and three scores. Cutler finished with a passer rating of 136.7, who would have seen that one coming?

Just like last Sunday night against the Washington Redskins, Dallas outgained the Bears 410 yards to 308, they ran 22 more plays than the Bears, but they also committed three turnovers. QB Tony Romo threw two interceptions and WR Roy Williams lost a fumble. The Cowboys had no running game. Marion Barber had just 31 yards on 11 carries and Felix Jones finished the afternoon with just 7 yards on 7 carries. Despite all of their woes, Dallas still could have tied the game at 20 but Dallas’ new kicker David Buehler badly missed a 44 yard try.

Dallas now sits winless at 0-2. Only 13% of teams which start 0-2 make the playoffs. Yes, I am aware that the 1993 Cowboys started 0-2 and went on to win the Super Bowl. That team was led by Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith. Tony Romo and Marion Barber are no where near the players Aikman and Smith were.

Dallas’ defense can’t protect a lead, their offensive line is a mess, Tony Romo can’t eliminate his mistakes and here come the red hot Houston Texans. Dallas has dug itself into a deep hole and it remains to be seen if they can climb out and get back into the playoff race. They have the talent but lets see if they can find the means.
