The Green Bay Packers are in serious need of a running back and have been linked to many trade rumors, are the Packers interested in trading for Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams? The Green Bay Packers have been linked to Buffalo Bills RB Marshawn Lynch and possibly former Pittsburgh Steelers RB Willie Parker, but yesterday FOX Sports analyst Jimmie Johnson threw out a possible new team for the Packers to possibly trade with, the Carolina Panthers.

The Green Bay Packers have one of the most explosive passing attacks in the league, but the loss of RB Ryan Grant is starting to show on the field for the Packers. RB’s Brandon Jackson and John Kuhn are both trying to fill the role of Ryan Grant, but have not been very effective. The Packers have failed to record over 100 rushing yards in their past three games. The longest run from scrimmage is only 18 yards.

While the Packers are a pass based offense, they are in need of a legitimate running threat in order to stop opposing defenses from playing their safeties so deep. That deep play of the safeties is seriously limiting the deep threat from the Packers, their longest pass play of the season is only 34 yards.

Jimmie Johnson threw out the suggestion that the Packers should contact the Carolina Panthers about one of their two talented running backs, DeAngelo Williams or Jonathan Stewart. The Panthers are not going anywhere this season and are currently 0-4 with no prospects for wins coming anytime soon.

Last week, a Charlotte Observer reporter threw out the idea of the Panthers trading WR Steve Smith. After the 2010 season, DeAngelo Williams is a free agent. Based on how the Panthers declined to sign any of their free agents last season, they might be inclined not to re-sign Williams after this season. Jonathan Stewart is currently playing in the third year of a 5 year 14 million dollar contract.

Williams would give the Green Bay Packers a serious threat at the running back position which would be a major upgrade for Green Bay. The Packers have 16 days to figure out what they want to do, but in order to get deep into the playoffs, the addition of a running threat will be necessary.

Packers better do something about getting a running back if they have any hope of a good season. With Ted Thompson at the controls who knowes what will happen.

  2. Dennis says:

Packers need De’Angelo! They can have James Jones thats a very fair trade!

The Packers will not get Williams because it will cost multiple picks and Thompson won’t part with one pick let alone two. I could see Mcgahee more then Williams.
