Despite using their first-round pick on Florida State standout Christian Ponder, the Minnesota Vikings knew they would need to acquire a veteran quarterback this offseason. Now, it appears they have found their quarterback–Donovan McNabb.

After there was plenty of talk about a deal in the works on the first day teams were eligible to trade players, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reported late Tuesday night that the Washington Redskins have reached an agreement to send McNabb to the Vikings–but there’s a catch. In order for the deal to happen, McNabb must be willing to take a pay cut–which means he will have to restructure the five-year deal worth $78 million he signed last November.

From Glazer’s Twitter account:

“Vikes agree to trade 6th rounder in 12 and possibly 6th in 13 to Wash for Donovan McNabb. Deal contingent on McNabb agreeing to much less $$.”

“Vikes were hoping for Tyler Thigpen and looking at Gradkowski and in the end McNabb at that low price, picks and salary, not much to lose.”

Whether or not McNabb will be willing to take less money to play in Minnesota remains unanswered. McNabb has been linked to the Vikings numerous times over the last few years (especially when Brad Childress was coach) and he would most likely be the starting quarterback for a year or two while the team waits for Ponder to develop.

It should be interesting to see if this deal will actually happen or if McNabb will put up a fight by refusing to re-negotiate his hefty contract.
