Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson pulled off one of the most amazing plays in NFL history against the New York Giants when he returned a punt 65 yards for the game-winning touchdown as time expired–capping off 28 unanswered points in the 4th quarter by the Eagles as they went on to win 38-31. With the NFC East rivals set to square off on Sunday, the Giants have plans to do something they regret not doing in Week 15 last season–kick the ball away from Jackson.

Giants punter Steve Weatherford discussed with Mike Garafolo of The Star-Ledger this week how he plans to put the ball on the sidelines or out of bounds instead of punting to Jackson on Sunday. Matt Dodge–who was released by the Giants during training camp–received all types of criticism for his decision to punt to Jackson last season and Weatherford hopes to learn from that mistake.

Looking back, it’s amazing to think how the 2010 season could have turned out differently for the Giants if it wasn’t for Jackson’s punt return at the end of that game along with blowing a 21-point lead in the fourth quarter to the Eagles. By blowing that game against Philadelphia, New York finished 10-6–losing both tiebreakers in the division and for the Wild Card.

The Giants realize how important Sunday’s game is considering both teams seem to be facing must-win situations and they know one of the keys to the game is finding a way to contain Jackson–so punting the ball away from him would be a wise decision.
