A Look at the Six ‘Winning’ Teams Randy Moss Would Consider Joining
One of the biggest surprises from this offseason was the unexpected retirement of Randy Moss–mainly because of all the hype from the wide receiver over the months leading up to training camp about how he was in tip-top shape. So when ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Sunday that Moss is all of a sudden open to returning to a “winning” team–it should come as no surprise.
Obviously, Moss wants to win a Super Bowl more than anything at this point in his career and realizes this season may be his best chance considering the 34-year-old wideout isn’t getting any younger. Here’s a look at the six “winning” teams Moss would supposedly consider joining if he came out of retirement.
New England Patriots
The obvious choice for Moss considering how successful his firs three seasons were under Bill Belichick (250 catches for 3,765 yards with 47 touchdowns). The Patriots contain the top-ranked offense in the NFL and the receiving corps is already loaded with talented–so the addition of Moss could make them more dangerous if he can change his attitude.
Philadelphia Eagles
After all of the additions this offseason and along with the “Dream Team” label they were given–it should be no surprise Moss would strongly consider joining the Eagles. Despite all of the weapons consisting of DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Jason Avant, and Steve Smith, Philadelphia could still use a deep threat like Moss in the passing game. This organization is putting all their cards in for the 2011 season and seemed willing to bring on just about any player they believe could help them win games–so why not Moss?
New York Jets
Despite their 2-0 start, the argument can be made the Jets’ passing game hasn’t lived up to their potential so far. While Santonio Holmes’ numbers have been decent (nine catches for 112 yards with one touchdown) so far, Plaxico Burress was held without a reception against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2 and is still far from returning to that dominant level he was at a few years ago. The Jets were linked to Moss a few times during the offseason and everybody knows he would love the chance to play against the Patriots not once, but twice this season.
New York Giants
The Giants contain one of the most dangerous weapons in football with Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham is a great second option for Eli Manning–but this team could still use help in the passing game. With Steve Smith now on the Eagles and Domenik Hixon out for the season after tearing his ACL against the St. Louis Rams–the Giants will now rely on Victor Cruz to step it up on offense and were desperate enough to sign Brandon Stokley to provide more help for Manning. At this point, all four teams (yes–including the Washington Redskins) in the NFC East seem capable of winning the division and Moss could be the missing piece to help the Giants finish on top.
Dallas Cowboys
Similar to the Giants, the Cowboys have plenty of talent in the passing game with Miles Austin, Dez Bryant, and Jason Witten–but there’s always room for improvement. Bryant is still bothered by a thigh injury suffered against the Jets in Week 1 and Austin has been dealing with a hamstring injury as well the last few weeks and will even miss his first game as a starter after being ruled out against the Washington Redskins. Dallas seems to have enough weapons on both sides of the ball to make a strong run at the postseason–so the Cowboys would certainly be a “winning” organization for Moss to consider.
Chicago Bears
When a team brings Roy Williams on board with the intention of hopefully making him the team’s No. 1 wideout–it’s never a good sign. Jay Cutler wouldn’t receive so much criticism if the Bears provided him with better options in the passing game (along with a better offensive line) and the fact that Johnny Knox is the team’s second leading wideout with five receptions behind Matt Forte’s 10 shows how much this team could use a player like Moss. The defending NFC North champions have what it takes to make another run in the division and may need all of the help they can get considering how good the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers look so far.
