Eagles Fan With ‘Anti-Reid’ Sign Speaks Out and Wants Apology From Organization; Says Jason Kelce Threatened His Nephew
One of the most popular stories from the City of Brotherly Love this week comes from the Philadelphia Eagles and the fans who posted a sign outside of the NovaCare Complex on Monday that read, “Andy, the Time’s …. to Go.” At first, it seemed like Eagles center Jason Kelce and guard Evan Methis were complete professionals when asking the fans to take the sign down as they stuck up for their head coach, but according to one fan–that’s not how it went down at all.
The fan they’re calling “John the Sign Man” recently joined Jon Marks and Sean Brace on 97.5 The Fanatic in Philly to tell his side of the story about what happened that day and based off what he claims–it doesn’t look good on the Eagles end. During the interview, John explained how his sign was across the street from the NovaCare Complex and how security members from the Eagles tried to scare him and his nephew away with the threat of a possible arrest.
Here’s what John said at the beginning of the interview:
“Eagles security came over I guess maybe two were out there after all of the media and news people came over. The guy says look you guys have the right to do whatever you want. I’m not going to tell you what you have to do or what not to do–but I don’t think you want to be arrested today. I said what am I going to get arrested for? He says well do you have a permit and I said no, I don’t have a permit. Well you have to take the sign down and I said well who are you? He says we’re with security for the Eagles and I say well this isn’t Eagles property. He says the State Police is coming and you’re going to have to take the sign down. So I said well when the police come, I’ll talk to the police. He says well I guess you want to get arrested and I say If i get arrested for putting up a sign–that’s on me. I’ll talk to the police when they come.”
Later on, John explains how Kelce and Mathis pulled up in an attempt to get them to take the signs down–which obviously didn’t happen. John said Kelce did all of the talking and claims the center even threatened him at one point–which he explains below.
“They said something like what’s the sign mean? He says well you can read it. He says are you going to get smart? No-read it. He says well what’s it mean. He said it’s obvious–it’s about your coach. He says well take the sign down and he goes I’m not taking it down. And he says well if you don’t take it down we’re getting out of the truck and you’re not going to like it–something along those lines. I didn’t hear it exactly because I was away from them.”
“The thing I want to clear up–I don’t know where Jason Kelce is getting off. He did not say a word. I believe this is all the Eagles and their public relations that they are probably nervous that someone is going to sue them or get harrassed or whatever–which I would never do. There’s nothing to sue them about. They must have went to Kelce and said clear this up.”
“He was loud, he was agitated. And he said you guys arne’t fans. You call yourself a fan? You’re not a fan you gotta support your team–that’s what fans do. You should go get a job basically and we got the best coach in the league–we should be 5-0.”
Finally, Kelce used Twitter on Wednesday to call John and his crew “varmint” along with saying they’re not real fans–which John found offensive in his explanation below.
“That upsets me so much. I really think I want an apology from him publicly and from the Eagles organization because I am a fan and I’m hurt. We’ve had season tickets since the 1950s–before they even had season tickets. They’ve been in our family and passed down. We go to the games, we have about 20 tickets in our name. We go to the game we have a huge tailgate party for the last 20 years where we have 150-200 people every week going there and supporting this team with Eagles paraphernalia, spending money. And we are fans of the team. To tell me that I’m not a fan and to call me varmint is a disgrace–an absolute disgrace. For someone in that organization, they have public relations people–they think that’s how you run an organization? I deserve an apology not for me–but for all of the fans of the city. The fans of the Philadelphia Eagles deserve an apology which I’m demanding for the entire fan base of the Eagles on my behalf. From the Eagles and from Jason Kelly and for them not to do that–they have no public relations. They’re an absolute disgrace.
It should be interesting to see how Kelce and the Eagles organization respond to this incident. Fans are what makes the game of football so great and to see something like this happen is nothing but a disappointment.
