Report: Detroit Lions Were Only Franchise to Lose Money During 2010 Season
At 6-2, the Detroit Lions are one of the hottest teams in football and all signs point to the team reaching the playoffs for the first time since the 1999 season. While the Lions and there fans finally have something to be proud of after 10-straight losing seasons, the
According to Ben Maller of Yahoo! Sports, the Lions were the only organization out of 32 teams that actually lost money during the 2010 season. Lions owner William Clay Ford Sr. recently took the unfortunate honors of being named the league’s worst owner in a list conducted by Forbes–mainly because the organization has gone down in value by three percent over the last five seasons.
From 2005-10, the Lions won a combined 23 games and became the first team in NFL history to go winless after finishing 0-16 during the 2008 season. Obviously, the economy in Detroit must have played a key part in fans attending games when the Lions were the laughing stock of the NFL a few years ago, but times have changed since then.
Luckily, the organization appears to have a bright future ahead as serious contenders for years to come with a high-powered offense led by Matthew Stafford and a defense that’s on the rise thanks to Ndamukong Suh. As long as the Lions avoid a collapse and continue to play at this high level, it’s safe to say the organization won’t face the embarrassment of being the only team in the NFL to lose money for the 2011 season.
Instead, that honor may go to the 0-7 Miami Dolphins–who have lost 12 of their last 13 games at home.
