Eagles Fans–This is What Rock Bottom Feels Like
Just when you thought the Philadelphia Eagles couldn’t hit another all-time low–Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals happened.
For the fifth time this season, the Eagles blew a fourth-quarter lead and fell to 3-6 on the year after losing to the Cardinals 21-17 on Sunday. With the loss, Philadelphia pretty much ruled out any small bit of hope that was left for making the playoffs–which is embarrassing for a team with such high expectations prior to the start of the season.
On paper, the Eagles should be considered one of the top teams in the NFL. A high-stacked offense consisting of Michael Vick, LeSean McCoy, DeSean Jackson, and Jeremy Maclin. A dynamic-duo at cornerback with Nnamdi Asomugha and Asante Samuel on defense.
Yet for some reason, this Philadelphia team just can’t seem to figure out a way to win games–especially when it comes to holding a lead late in the fourth quarter. Sure, the offensive line is terrible and they could use plenty of help at linebacker, but there’s no excuse for this team to be playing as bad as they have been–period.
What happened Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field was nothing short of an embarrassment for a team that was supposed to be one of the top contenders in the NFC in 2011. Even if the Eagles were playing without DeSean Jackson and a banged-up Jeremy Maclin, this team still had plenty of weapons on offense to get by the league’s 27th ranked defense–but they didn’t.
And if that wasn’t bad enough, Philadelphia made second-string quarterback John Skelton–who threw for 315 yards and three touchdowns–look like John Elway with the way he helped Arizona get back into the game. This team has seen plenty of embarrassing moments throughout the 2011 season, but nothing is as embarrassing as losing to a team like the Cardinals at home like they did on Sunday.
On the bright side, at least Eagles fans can get the feeling of disappointment out of the way now instead of January considering this team has no shot at making the playoffs anymore.
