After Release From the Vikings, Will the Bears Consider Making a Move For Donovan McNabb?
(Rob Grabkowski/US PRESSWIRE)

With just five weeks left in the regular season, the Minnesota Vikings have decided to part ways with quarterback Donovan McNabb–who was acquired from the Washington Redskins during the offseason. The Vikings brought McNabb on board with the hope he would be their short-term answer at quarterback and allow Christian Ponder to learn from the sidelines during his rookie season–but that planned obviously backfired when the veteran lost the starting job after just six games.

Whether or not McNabb will join another team before the regular season comes to an end or simply wait until 2012 is still unknown, but there are certainly two playoff-caliber teams that may consider bringing the veteran quarterback on board–such as the Chicago Bears.

Since Week 6, the Bears have been considered one of the hottest teams in football and appear to be determined to make a strong run at a Wild Card spot in the NFC. However, if Chicago has any intention of reaching the playoffs, they’ll have to do it with Caleb Hanie at quarterback since Jay Cutler could miss the remainder of the season with a broken thumb.

Don’t get me wrong, Hanie certainly seems like the type of player that could develop into an effective quarterback and showed potential at times against the Oakland Raiders in Week 12. Still, there’s a bit of concern over Hanie since he is inexperienced when it comes to being an NFL quarterback. Last Sunday was Hanie’s first career start in four years since joining the NFL in 2008 and he had only completed eight career passes prior to this season during the regular season–so it’s hard not to wonder whether Hanie is the right choice to get the Bears to the playoffs.

As for McNabb, he may not have looked like the same effective quarterback the last two seasons with the Redskins and Vikings may not be the same quarterback from his glory days with the Eagles, but it’s debatable he could be the short-term answer for the Bears–especially when it comes to his experience in the playoffs (even if he has yet to win a Super Bowl).

Think about it, the Bears previously expressed their interest in acquiring Kyle Orton before the Kansas City Chiefs snagged him off waivers–so it’s obvious they would take a better quarterback than Hanie if he was available at the right place. Chicago was always in the mix as a possible destination for McNabb a few years ago when his name was thrown around trade rumors–so maybe this is finally the time when McNabb returns to his hometown.
