Report: Eagles Head Coach Andy Reid’s Job Appears to Be Safe For Now
(Joe Nicholson/US PRESSWIRE)

In what may go down as one of the most disappointing seasons in the organization’s history, many wondered whether or not the Philadelphia Eagles would part ways with head coach Andy Reid once the season came to an end after the team’s surprising 4-8 start. When things get this bad, the immediate blame is put on the head coach and even though he deserves to be shown the door, it appears Reid is at least safe for one more season.

Dan Pompei of the National Football Post discussed in this week’s edition of the Sunday Blitz how a source close to the situation claims Reid’s job is safe for now–despite how bad this season has been for Philadelphia. However, Pompei brought up a good point about one way Reid and the Eagles could part ways if the head coach refuses to make one specific move on his coaching staff.

From Pompei’s article:

“No matter what they chant at the Linc or how badly the Eagles play, it appears that Andy Reid is safe, according to those who are close to the situation. There appears to be only one scenario in which Reid could be let go: if Eagles ownership tries to force Reid to make a staff change he does not want to make (hello, Juan Castillo), Reid could refuse and put the target on his own back.

Obviously, there’s absolutely no reason why Castillo deserves to come back considering how pathetic the defense has looked this season and promoting him to defensive coordinator–even though he had no experience in the NFL as a defensive coach–was one of the most ridiculous moves ever made during the Reid era. Reid’s resume of nine playoff appearances with five trips to the NFC Championship and one Super Bowl are all impressive, but it’s gotten to the point where it’s time for the organization to move on.

Reid has been heavily criticized for his lack of discipline on players and he’s failed to bring the team it’s first Super Bowl despite coaching plenty of talented teams capable of winning it all. In other words, Reid’s job may be safe for now, but the pressure will be on him more than ever in 2012 to finally come through–or the organization may finally decide to part ways.
