Bengals Give Jay Gruden Three-Year Extension Worth $3.6 Million
Despite earning the No. 6 seed in the AFC for the 2012 NFL playoffs, expectations weren’t high for the Cincinnati Bengals prior to the start of the regular season considering all of the adjustment that needed to be made on offense. However, that didn’t stop first-year offensive coordinator Jay Gruden from exceeding all expectations and earning himself an extension.
According to Gregg Rosenthal of ProFootballTalk.com, the Bengals have given Gruden a three-year extension worth $3.6 million to avoid any chance of losing him anytime soon with all of these head coaching changes taking place around the league. Not only did Gruden play a key role in helping Cincinnati reach the playoffs in his first season, but he did it with rookies Andy Dalton and A.J. Green leading the way–which nobody could have predicted.
Obviously, if this season is any indication of what to expect, there’s a bright future ahead for Dalton and Green when it comes to the NFL–so this was a great move on Cincinnati’s end. And to think how this was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Bengals after losing Carson Palmer and Chad Ochocinco during the offseason.
