Breaking: New York Jets Give QB Mark Sanchez Three Year Extension
Steve Mitchell- US PRESSWIRE

So it appears the New York Jets are no longer a part of the nascent Peyton Manning Sweepstakes–if they ever were to begin with.

According to multiple reports, the Jets have showed faith in controversial quarterback Mark Sanchez, agreeing in principle with him to a three-year contract extension.

The team announced the Sanchez extension during a conference call earlier this evening, the details of which have yet to be released to the public. General Manager Mike Tannenbaum mentioned during the same call that the Jets considered Peyton Manning but decided to continue with Sanchez.

Mark Sanchez’s 2011 numbers were well below expectations of fans in New York and expectations of Rex Ryan and the Jets’ coaching staff, however, what he has done for the franchise was enough to earn an extension.

This decision is certain to be panned by the New York media outlets who have taken extreme pleasure over the past few seasons in their criticism of a quarterback they perceive to be more interested in celebrity than production on the field.

Mark Sanchez has now been given the chance he wants to prove he deserves to be the Jets quarterback and can take them deeper into the NFL playoffs than we have seen in recent seasons.

The question remains though, does he have the chops to actually get it done?

I personally don’t think so.

The Jets think so, though, and for now, that’s all that matters.
