Reports: Niners QB Alex Smith to Visit With Miami Dolphins Today
Cary Edmondson- US PRESSWIRE

According to several reports, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith is set to visit with officials from the Miami Dolphins this afternoon.

The visit is due in large part to a Peyton Manning workout with San Francisco head coach Jim Harbaugh this past Tuesday evening at Duke University, and the Dolphins dire need at quarterback. The Dolphins have kept all of their options open and made a concerted effort to meet with each of the available high-profile free agents in a desire to make the best move possible for the franchise.

Green Bay Packers free-agent backup quarterback Matt Flynn is also reported to be in the mix for the Miami opening, although he has yet to visit with team officials.

After some research, it turns out Peyton Manning and Alex Smith share the same agent, Tom Condon. Given this, a conflict of interest could indeed be in place if Manning decides the 49ers are his best option, and Smith desires to find a new home accordingly. Odds are if Manning decides to sign with San Francisco, Alex Smith will hire a new agent post haste to find him a new home and part ways with Condon. This storyline is not as visible, but a vital element nonetheless.

Should Alex Smith sign with the Dolphins and Peyton Manning land in San Francisco there should be little surprise.

The Niners have made aggressive moves over the past few weeks to bolster their wide receiving corps and make it more attractive to Manning, as they signed both free agents Randy Moss and Mario Manningham. These two, along with incumbent No. 1 options Vernon Davis and Michael Crabtree, make for a formidable bunch of offensive weapons.

In Miami, Alex Smith would have the chance to determine his own destiny on a team which is young, but talented, and the owner of multiple future draft picks due to recent trades.

While Alex Smith’s visit to Miami today may not be earth-shattering, it has implications which are much broader.
