Rumor: Cleveland Browns May Trade Colt McCoy to Green Bay Packers
Eric P. Mull-US PRESSWIRE

The Cleveland Browns have never been convinced former University of Texas star quarterback Colt McCoy would be their long-term answer.

Now, it appears he may in fact be on the trading block.

The Browns’ lack of confidence has been obvious time and again, as both the coaching staff and general manager Mike Holmgren have refused to give a full vote of confidence to McCoy whether it be in private or in public.

The Browns made a further signal of their discontent last evening in picking Oklahoma State star Brandon Weeden with the No. 22 pick in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft after acquiring the pick from the Atlanta Falcons.

Reports have surfaced this morning there is more than one reason behind the pick, and the Browns may be looking to trade McCoy to the Green Bay Packers.

Mary Kay Cabot, the Cleveland Plain Dealer Browns beat writer tweeted the following earlier this morning:

The Packer Report was one of the first to report the possibility of the trade in this report.

The Packers have a 6th-round pick as well as four 7th-round selections in the 2012 draft which could be used as trade bait to entice the Browns into a move that makes some logistical sense for both sides.

After the departure of Matt Flynn to the Seattle Seahawks in free agency, the Packers need a backup quarterback whom they could play without hesitation should Aaron Rodgers be injured at any point going forward. Given that McCoy has been a starter in the league for a full season now, he undoubtedly fits this bill.

It’s possible Colt McCoy may just need a change of scenery to someday reach the potential it seems he has in spades.

While he won’t see consistent action in Green Bay in the short-term, quarterbacks are a fickle bunch, and there isn’t anything set in stone that Aaron Rodgers will be the starter for the Packers in perpetuity.

This is definitely one to watch as the 2nd round of the draft kicks off today and trade talks and movement really begins to heat up around the NFL.
