NFL Rumors: Hakeem Nicks Will Be Ready By Opening Day?
Mark L. Baer-US PRESSWIRE

New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks got some awful news when he found out he broke his fifth metatarsal in his foot making a cut at OTAs. Original prognosis indicated he would be out for three months, putting him back sometime around the middle of August.

If you asked Nicks today, he’d tell you that he’s right on track for that return. He is already doing individual drills during training camp and he should be cleared to start cutting on that foot soon. Nicks told reporters he hasn’t had any setbacks during the rehab process.

“No setbacks, everything is going the way we planned. We’re just sticking to the things that doctors and trainers told us to do. [Mid-August] sounds about right if that is what they are saying. I am seeing the doctors day in and day out. Everything looks good about it.”

This is good news for Giants fans. 2011 first round pick Prince Amukamara suffered the same injury on the second day of training camp last year and missed 15 weeks of practice, three more weeks than the 12 projected for Nicks’ return.

Nicks knows this offense and he and Eli Manning have developed trust in one another, so there is no rush to get Nicks back. However, if he is fully healed by the middle of August, he should be ready to go when the Giants take on the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL season opener on September 5.
