NFL Rumors: Should the Houston Texans Sign Chris Cooley?
Geoff Burke-US PRESSWIRE

Chris Cooley announced his release from the Washington Redskins today in a press conference, but also said he still strongly believes he can play at a high level. Would another team take a chance on him this close to the start of the season? If someone jumps on him quickly, they can get about a full week’s worth of practices in. One team that comes to mind is the Houston Texans, who lost backup tight end Joel Dreessen to free agency this offseason.

The Texans still have Owen Daniels, but he has been injury prone year in and year out. Dreessen was a great backup, but now the Texans have a host of mostly untested players behind him. Garrett Graham has looked decent this preseason, catching seven passes for 141 yards. Behind him are rookies Logan Brock and Philip Supernaw (which may be one of the coolest last names ever), so a veteran infusion could help this group.

The problem with Cooley is you don’t know if he is 100 percent healthy. He appeared in just five games last year and caught eight passes for 65 yards. He has spent eight years in the NFL though, and his experience could help.

He is also a very versatile player and could split time at fullback as well. He would only help the Texans offense by providing insurance at two positions. He is worth the look.
