Spurs Begin Title March
Basketball is about to head back to the river walk once again. Ok, so the AT&T Center in San Antonio is not quite on the famed river walk, but close enough. It does not matter though, as the important thing is basketball is back.
The San Antonio Spurs open the season versus the very team that eliminated them from the playoffs last year, the Memphis Grizzlies. The Grizzlies are lead by a dominant front court in Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph, while they also have a formidable backcourt in Rudy Gay, O.J. Mayo, and Mike Conley.
The Grizzlies were able to defeat the Spurs without Gay last year, and with him back this team is even more dangerous. Randolph had gotten into trouble in Portland and was desperate for a change. He sure has found a home in Memphis.
San Antonio is going to have a tough time stopping the Grizzlies. Unfortunately, the Spurs do not have a Bruce Bowen type player who is a key lock down guy. Tim Duncan, Matt Bonner, and Tiago Splitter are going to have a tough time versus Z-Bo.
Randolph is a big, physical post player is going to be all over the boards. Whoever will be covering him tonight is going to have his hands full.
For the Spurs to win tonight, they are going to have to get points from their Big 3, but someone is going to have to step up besides them. I’m looking at you, Richard Jefferson. I wouldn’t be surprised if DeJuan Blair has a big game, as he had a great postseason.
Though the Spurs lack a great shutdown defender, if they can play team defense, they should be able to limit the abilities of the Memphis Grizzlies. One strategy they might employ is to shut down Randolph, and make someone else beat them. How well they can execute this is another story.
Whatever the case may be, San Antonio cannot take these guys lightly anymore. They took out the Spurs, and took the Thunder to game seven without Gay.
