Report links former head coach Dave Wannstedt to the San Diego Chargers
The San Diego Chargers are now without a defensive coordinator after Ron Rivera took the head coaching job with the Carolina Panthers, so who replaces Ron Rivera? ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting this afternoon on Twitter that the defensive coordinator position could be filled by former Miami Dolphins head coach Dave Wannstedt.
Wannstedt, 58, has been involved in coaching since 1975 both in the college ranks as well as the NFL. Wannstedt was the defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys from 1989-1992, before being named the head coach of the Chicago Bears, eventually a defensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins and eventually a hed coach of the Dolphins before returning to the college coaching ranks.
I have some serious questions on whether or not Wannstedt can replicate the job that Rivera did with the Chargers defense this season. San Diego finished the season with the top ranked defensive squad in the league at the end of the regular season, and still failed to reach the playoffs. And it is said that defense wins championships.
If the Chargers do indeed hire Wannstedt as their defensive coordinator, this is nothing more than a case of another “name” coach getting recycled by another former friend, head coach Norv Turner, who worked together during their time with the Dallas Cowboys.
This is a move in the wrong direction as far as I’m concerned for the Chargers, which have some explaining to do to their fan base this offseason after such a disappointing season filled with very unconventional moves.
