The San Diego Chargers lost to the Detroit Lions by a final score of 38-10, and due to tiebreaker scenarios, this put an end to San Diego’s playoff chances.  The Chargers were thoroughly dominated as Matthew Stafford went 29/36 for 373 passing yards and three touchdowns.  In comparison, Philip Rivers had less completions, passing yards, and touchdowns while attempting 17 more passes.  Rivers finished the game 28/53 with 299 passing yards, one touchdown and two interceptions one of which was returned for a touchdown by Cliff Avril.  Going into this game, I felt as though the turnover battle would be a cause for concern as Detroit was +11 in turnover differential and San Diego was -4.  Donald Butler appeared to knock the ball loose from Kevin Smith of Detroit, and Corey Liuget recovered the ball, which would have tied the game at 7-7, but officials ruled that Smith hit the turf before the ball came out.  This drive would eventually lead to a field goal by the Lions to put them up 10-0.

Malcom Floyd and Ryan Mathews were the few bright spots for San Diego as Floyd caught six passes for 95 yards, and scored the team’s only touchdown while Mathews had 11 carries for 58 yards.  The play calls for San Diego were very questionable to say the least as Detroit is the worst team in the NFL at stopping the run in terms of yards per attempt, yet the Chargers only had 16 rushes compared to 53 pass attempts.  San Diego could not contain Calvin Johnson, Nate Burleson or Brandon Pettigrew as they combined to catch 19 passes for 265 yards and two touchdowns.  This was San Diego’s worst loss under head coach Norv Turner as the Chargers unfortunately got a dose of their own medicine following three consecutive wins by an average of about 24 points per game.

Damn Chargers Turner and Smith will be out on their sorry a$$e$ motivate the team from day one and we’d be super bowl contenders!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Kenny Gardner says:

I agree because San Diego has one of the best offenses and their defense was ranked 11th before yesterday’s game. Also, when they lost six in a row, five of their six losses were by seven points or less including two overtime losses by three points each to Kansas City and Denver.
