The San Diego Chargers bring back Luis Castillo
The San Diego Chargers re-signed Luis Castillo to a one year deal worth $1 million about a month after releasing him. Castillo was set to be paid $3.9 million in 2012 and was owed $9.3 million over two years after that before he was released on March 5, 2012. San Diego took a $2.1 million cap hit for 2012 by releasing Castillo. The former first round pick in the 2005 NFL Draft had seven sacks in 10 games during the 2006 season in only 10 games played, but Castillo only has 8.5 sacks in 56 games since 2006.
San Diego’s defensive line combined for 11.5 sacks in 2011 after combining for 15 sacks during the 2010 season. The Chargers still need to add that dominant pass rusher to take pressure away from their linebackers and the secondary. Castillo did not play in six games during the 2007 season, missed two games during the 2009 season and did not play in 15 games last season, so this move should be one that adds depth on the defensive line in preparation for a first round selection in the 2012 NFL Draft.
Outside linebacker Antwan Barnes missed one game during the 2011 season and was one sack away from having more sacks than the entire defensive line combined. San Diego has the 18th pick in the NFL Draft for the second year in a row. Corey Liuget was chosen last year and only recorded one sack in 15 games which included 13 starts. Liuget was a second team All-Big Ten member in 2010, so if the Chargers are able to add a dominant pass rusher, he could thrive and so can the rest of the defense.
