Junior Seau was found today by his housekeeper according to reports on nctimes.com with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.  Seau was the fifth overall pick in the 1990 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers. Seau’s last season in the NFL was in 2009 following 13 seasons with the Chargers, three with the Miami Dolphins and four with the New England Patriots.  During Seau’s tenure with San Diego, he was a 10 time All-Pro linebacker and a 12 time Pro Bowler.  Seau also made the NFL’s All-Decade team during the 1990′s.

Seau’s best season with the Chargers happened in 1994 when he was voted AFC player of the year and San Diego made it to Super Bowl XXIX. Seau had 124 tackles, 5.5 sacks three fumble recoveries and one forced fumble that season.  He set his career high in sacks with seven in 1991 and would go on to tie this mark in 1996 and 1997. Seau set his career high in tackles with 129 in 1991 and tied this mark in 1993.  Seau is a member of the San Diego Chargers Hall of Fame and is sure to be an NFL Hall of Famer when the time comes for his eligibility.

Seau is currently 10th all-time in games started with 243, 18th all-time in fumble recoveries with 131, 19th all-time in games played with 268 and was in the top 100 for sacks with 56.5 when he finished playing.  Seau had many on the field accomplishments, but perhaps none measure up to the Walter Payton Man of the Year award he received in 1994 for his charity and volunteer work. Seau leaves behind his daughter Sydney and his sons Jake and Hunter.
