Singletary’s Offseason Effect
[picappgallerysingle id="7385310"]10 Pro Bowl Selections, 7 All Pro selections, 1 Super bowl ring, and a Hall of Fame induction. All those numbers add up to respect, and that’s what Mike Singletary gets. The 49er’s Faithful witnessed first hand the effect that Coach Sing has on his players. In 2008 when he took over a team that didn’t look like they wanted to play football, his players instantly rallied around him and they won four of their last five games. We witnessed a first time coach send his most athletic player home at halftime. We later witnessed that player live up to his potential and become a team captain. We witnessed the “I want Winners†speech, and the creation of “Hamstring Hillâ€. From the moment Singletary took over as head coach his players have respected him and have wanted to play for him.
Singletary’s impact on his players changes what the 49ers can do this offseason. Here are some players that potentially the 49ers could pick up that would benefit most from the Singletary Effect.
Terrence Cody from Alabama is a classic space eating nose tackle. Mount Cody isn’t going to get any sacks or much penetration, but it will take two people to block him. He takes away the Quarterback’s ability to step up in the pocket because nobody can move him. Could you imagine throwing him in front of Patrick Willis? Linemen wouldn’t be able to scrap off the line and get in P. Will’s way. A free P.Will means a great defense.
Cody does come with questions. Coaches wonder if Cody has the potential to become more than just a giant blob in the middle of their defense. People don’t think he has the work ethic to succeed at the next level. Cody’s weight can to get out of control fast. At the Senior Bowl Cody weighed in at 370. He plays at 355.
Could the Singletary effect make Cody a steal in the second or third round of April’s draft? Cody would not be out of shape while playing for Coach Sing. I love the story of coach Sing’s playing days. When Coach Sing reported to training camp as a rookie, the coaches made him run all practice and when he asked why he was running, Buddy Ryan told him “Because you’re a fat little rascalâ€. That philosophy translates to Sings coaching style; he keeps his players in shape. Watching the combine I realized that Cody can move, it’s not pretty, but he is an Athlete. Coach Sing knows the importance of a guy like Cody. Sing had The Refrigerator Perry protecting him while he was playing. With our current Nose Tackle, Aubrayo Franklin, on a one year deal could Coach Sing take a chance on a Mount?
If you watched the combine you know all about this guy.
Bruce Campbell. The Left Tackle out of Maryland took over the combine. His numbers weren’t all that much better than Trent Williams, but the way he did the drills and looked at the combine was amazing. The thing about Campbell is he just wasn’t that great in college. There were questions about his motor and his interest in football. All in all, Campbell was ok, but the other tackles in this year’s draft played better than him.
The Singletary Effect could be huge here. If Coach Sing could motivate Campbell to play the way he is physically capable of playing Campbell could revolutionize the tackle position. Maybe it’s because they both came from the same school, or because they look like the new breed of athlete at their position, but Campbell could be the right tackle version of Vernon Davis.
I haven’t heard too many 49er fans talking about this guy. He’s a big back, constantly runs down hill, and if the 49ers ever need it, he has a mean right hook.
Legarrette Blount. We all know why this guy has so many question marks. For those who don’t… he punched a guy on national TV and pretty much went nuts for about 10 minutes after a football game. But there are not many questions about this guy’s skill. Not to mention Frank Gore is getting older, and his knees scare me. Also, we don’t know how good Coffee is. It might be time too think about the future at running back. Legarrette could be a Brandon Jacobs type of back.
The 49ers don’t have too many players with character issues on the team. With Coach Sing and his old school style the 49ers could afford to get a guy who might have some of these types of questions. The last guy I want to focus on has the most issues out of the group. He also is currently a free agent.
Adam “Pac Man†Jones; he has talent. The 49ers need a Kick Returner. I know he’s a risk and has shown no real signs of remorse for his actions but we could get him cheap and he knows it’s his last shot at playing in the NFL. Maybe Coach Sing could be the perfect guy to give the Pac Man another chance.

Great points. I agree that Singletary has an effect on his players character. I always wished the Bears would have brought his back as a coach.
Good post, I agree on most fronts, though I don’t think Pacman Jones has a whole lot to offer any team. He’s a candle with a defective wick, not even Singletary could light a fire up under ‘im, and I really believe that. Either way, good post.
Thanks James. I think if we don’t get a kick returner in the draft Pack Man could be a decent desperation pick up.
No i would’nt touch Pac-Man with a 10 ft. pole. If we have to draft a speacial teams player so be it. I don’t think Sing wants to babysit a grown man that can’t stT OUT OF TROUBLE. i would rather take a chance on Micheal Vick.
Out of all the guys i listed Pac-Man is my least favorite. The only way I could see the 49ers grabbing him would be if he kills it at his workout, and we miss on all the special teamers in the draft. As far as Vick, I think we’re a year late to that party. I wanted the 49ers to get him last year and hopefully he could start this year, but now that Alex looks like he could be a legit QB I don’t think we could afford to get Vick.
What do you think about Brandon Marshall or
