49ers’ Draft Board 2010
[picappgallerysingle id="8124217"]
Tomorrow is a huge day for the 49ers organization. It’s the day where the team becomes great or they invest millions into player that wont work out. It’s the day Trent Ballike auditions for the 49ers full time GM position. Tomorrow is the day where dreams are made and dynasties are built. Tomorrow is the NFL Draft.
In honor of the draft I’ve put together a draft board that the 49ers should follow. This isn’t the order that the players will be taken. This is a ranking of players the 49ers should draft.
1. Russell Okung OT Oklahoma State
Okung is arguably the best player in the draft. He gets the nod over Berry and the DTs because OT is the 49er’s biggest need and I have the first four guys graded about even.
2. Eric Berry S Tennessee
[picappgallerysingle id="7442828"]
Two weeks ago I saw a few mock drafts by some respected reporters that had Berry falling to the 49ers. If that were to happen, the 49ers would become one of the most feared defenses in the league.
3. Ndamukong Suh DT Nebraska
Suh is better suited to be a 3-4 defensive end then a three-technique tackle. Either way he will be great.
4. Gerald McCoy DT Oklahoma
McCoy scares me a bit. I watched the combine and I didn’t see McCoy do the drills with any intensity or power. When Suh hit the bag, the stadium shook, but when McCoy hit the bag the guy holding it barely moved. With that said I still think he will be a beast in the NFL. If the 49ers were to get McCoy, he’d play DE and mirror Justin Smith.
5. Sam Bradford QB Oklahoma
Bradford has an abundance of potential. He’s smart and can make all the throws. If he were to fall to the 49ers, I couldn’t see them passing on him.
6. Trent Williams OT Oklahoma
Williams has the most potential out of all four big time tackles in this year’s draft. He also plays Right Tackle, which is a bigger need for the 49ers then the other side.
7. Bryan Bulaga OT Iowa
People have Bulaga higher than I do. Bulaga falls behind Williams because it looks like Bulaga has already maxed out his potential. His technique is great, his college o-line coach was great, and Bulaga will be a good pro.
8. Joe Haden CB Florida
Haden looks like he might be the 49er’s selection at 13. He would strengthen our secondary, if Haden were selected, look for Ante Clements to be on his way out.
9. Anthony Davis OT Rutgers
[picappgallerysingle id="8288815"]
Davis has the skill set to be the best tackle in this year’s draft. There are questions about Davis’ motor and work ethic, but that’s what coach Singletary is in San Francisco for.
10. Dez Bryant WR Oklahoma State
Bryant might be the steal of this year’s draft. He is the consensus best receiver in the draft. He runs clean routes, he’s big, he’s strong, and basically he is everything you want in a first round wide receiver. The reason he is falling on team’s draft board is because of his immature decision making off the field. His transgressions don’t match his fall, you have to bet that either he is not interviewing well or that teams are playing games so that they can draft him. Bryant can also return punts. In 23 attempts he had 3 touchdowns.
11. Cj Spiller RB Clemson
The 49er faithful seem to love this guy. Spiller is a threat to take it to the house every time he touches the ball. He fell past Bryant because drafting Spiller means losing Frank Gore sooner than we need to. Gore is not a running back that can come in and be effective. He wears down defenses and gets in a rhythm. Gore would do it, he’s a team guy, but he wouldn’t be effective in it.
13. Earl Thomas S Texas
The NFL network wants us to believe that Earl Thomas is the best safety in the draft. Eric Berry looks better at this point but Thomas might prove them right in the long run. The 49ers need to improve their secondary but Goldson is already the starter at free safety and I don’t think he would be excited to move closer to the line at strong safety.
14. Mike Iupati OG Idaho
Iupatai is the best interior linemen in this year’s class. Too bad guard isn’t a value pick in the first round. If Iupati is the 49ers selection, he will challenge Bass and Chilo for their starting jobs right away.
15. Taylor Mays S USC
[picappgallerysingle id="7039489"]
If Taylor Mays entered the draft in 2009, he would have been a top 10 pick. This year he is projected to fall into the range of 20-30. Mays is a beast physically but he lacks some intangibles that NFL scouts look for in a safety. A team will take a chance on his athleticism and I wouldn’t be surprised if it is the 49ers.
16. Jimmy Clausen QB Notre Dame
There isn’t really a consensus on the draft grade of Jimmy Clausen, but it has been floating around the Internet that if he’s available at 13, the 49ers will pick him.
17. Rolando McClain MLB Alabama
The 49ers don’t have a need for another middle linebacker but McClain could be the best player available when the 49ers select at 17.
18. Jason Pierre-Paul DE/OLB South Florida
Pierre-Paul fell a bit on this draft board when the 49ers signed free agent linebacker Travis Laboy. Pierre-Paul is a great athlete and reminds me of Manny Lawson.
19.Dan Williams DT Tennessee
I’m not sold that Williams could be an effective nose tackle, but he could be a great 3-4 DE. If the 49ers are willing to give up on the Kentwan Balmer project, Williams could be the replacement.
20. Sergio Kindle DE/OLB Texas
[picappgallerysingle id="7011987"]
The 49ers are always looking for pass rush help. Kindle might provide that.
Players to look out for:
Terrence Cody
[picappgallerysingle id="7323926"]
A pure nose tackle is hard to come by. Cody might be a reach the 49ers are willing to make at 17.
Bruce Campbell
An athletic freak; Campbell could become the Vernon Davis of the OT position.
