49er’s gameplan to beat Buccaneers-Frank Gore

If the San Francisco 49er’s want to extend their two game win streak, the gameplan against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers needs to be RB Frank Gore, and a lot of him. Tampa Bay does not play well on the West Coast, and when you throw in their vulnerability in run defense, a heavy dose of Frank Gore needs to be in store on Sunday. The young Buccaneers play very respectable pass defense, even with their lack of a pass rush, so there is no need to put Troy Smith, in only his third game for the Niners, in a position of having to throw the ball in order to win.
The Buccaneers tried to improve their run defense this season by drafting DT’s Gerald McCoy and Brian Price in the first and second rounds of the draft. McCoy has shown glimpses of the type of player he can become, but not with much consistency. Brian Price missed all pre-season and was put on the injured reserve list two weeks ago with a pelvis injury.
The result? A 31st ranked run defense which is allowing 143 yards per game. The Buccaneers have given up some big games to top quality backs so far this season. Pittsburgh Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall, 19-143-1 TD. Cincinnati Bengals RB Cedric Benson, 23-144. St. Louis Rams RB Steven Jackson, 22-110. Atlanta Falcons RB Michael Turner, 24-107-2.
The young Buccaneers pass defense has become very opportunistic in creating turnovers, the Niners gameplan should include at least 25 carried by Frank Gore, and a limited number of throws by Troy Smith. A strong running game will also limit the time of possession for the Buccaneers, second year QB Josh Freeman has proven himself to be very good at late game come backs in his young career.
