The San Francisco 49ers were in a perfect position to draft a quarterback with the seventh overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, but decided to focus on the other side of the ball instead and draft Missouri defensive end Aldon Smith instead. After completing a trade with the Denver Broncos, the 49ers hope the 36th overall pick improves their need at quarterback with the selection of Nevada’s Colin Kaepernick.

With the future of Alex Smith still up in the air, San Francisco hopes the 6’5″ Kaepernick can develop into the type of franchise quarterback they have been waiting years for. Smith has shown potential at times, but he’s never lived up to the hype when he was selected as the No. 1 pick in the 2005 NFL Draft.

Kaepernick threw for 3,022 yards with 21 touchdowns and just eight interceptions last season while helping Nevada to an impressive 12-1 record during the regular season. Kaepernick has proven to be a winner throughout his career and will make it an interesting quarterback battle with Smith once training camp gets underway in a few months.
