Tampa Bay Bucs QB Josh Johnson Wants to Play for San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers may have another option at quarterback should they choose to explore it; Tampa Bay QB Josh Johnson would love to reunite with Jim Harbaugh, who coached him at the University of San Diego.
Johnson is an Oakland native as well, so the ties to the west coast and Harbaugh are hard to ignore.
“I’d get to come home, be with my family, play for a coach that changed my life and play for a team that I grew up loving,” Johnson said. “But the reality of the situation is this is a business and we’re all seeing it with this lockout. So I’m a part of the Buccaneers and I have one year left. So if that’s where I’ll be, [Tampa Bay's] Raheem [Morris] is a great coach. I’ve enjoyed playing for him.”
Johnson had a tough rookie season in 2009, playing in six games, throwing four touchdowns against eight interceptions with a 56 QB rating.
He seemed to take a step forward in 2010. Though Josh Freeman was the man in Tampa, Johnson appeared in 11 games and completed 14 of his 16 pass attempts with 0 touchdowns and 0 interceptions.
It’s hard to get a real read on his performance last season since he wasn’t a consistent starter, but if there is anyone who knows Johnson and could develop him, it’s Harbaugh.
Johnson understands that the 49ers just drafted Colin Kaepernick, but he doesn’t seem to care.
“I will compete with anybody, any time, anywhere,” he said. “Putting a title on anything is just a title. Titles can be changed. So however our situation plays out, I’m fine with competing. I’ve been doing it my whole life. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Johnson also pointed to Harbaugh’s unique experience as a quarterback in the NFL as something that gives his players confidence.
“It gives you confidence and there’s a certain respect factor,” Johnson said. “Not to put down any other coaches, but there’s some coaches that never played the game. So they may not be able to understand with certainty what you’re seeing or what you’re going through. He has that. It makes it easier for you to respect what he’s saying because he was under the fire for many years and successful as well. It makes it easy to trust what he’s saying and to go out there and apply to it your game.”
