San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders Looking in to Sharing New Stadium?

The San Francisco 49ers have been looking in to building a new stadium in Santa Clara, but are now reportedly interested in possibly sharing a stadium with the Oakland Raiders to make it easier to fund the project.

Jed York, 49ers executive, said “we’ve put our teams together. It doesn’t mean we’re going to find the right deal that fits for both teams, but we’re certainly going to get a look at those options.”

The Raiders appear open to the idea.

“We have said repeatedly that we have an open mind with respect to our stadium solution,” said Raiders chief executive Amy Trask. “An open mind means an open mind as to sharing a facility with the 49ers. I say to Jed regularly that we should have not only an open mind to the sharing of the facility, but to the location of the facility which we might share. And so there are a lot of options for us to consider.”

York also commented on the team’s history with one another, and believes a partnership would work despite the possibility of the fans not getting along.

“One of the things that I think a lot of people don’t realize about the 49ers and the Raiders is that the person who brokered the deal when my grandfather bought the team was Mr. Davis,” York said. “So it’s not like there is any bad blood. You need to look at that. When you’re talking about a billion-dollar investment, and there’s not a lot of public money in California to build these stadiums, you need to look at those things and that’s something that we’ve done.”

The issue, according to Vittorio Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle, is the location of the new stadium. The 49ers had a motion passed last June to fund $114 million to their Santa Clara stadium site, but the estimated cost would be about $1 billion.

The difference is where the Raiders could come in and help. According to Tafur, the Raiders have also pursued a stadium at the same location but received little public funding or support for the project.

It appears that if either team is going to build in Santa Clara, they would need each other to get that done.

With todays economics its a no brainer to share a stadium. It would be actuallly pretty cool that two storied franchises would be in one stadium.

I agree it would be cool for the Bay area teams to share a stadium, it would definitely make it much easier on the city’s economy if they shared it with Oakland

The Raiders are moving to LA in the new AEG stadium. They will share that stadium with the Chargers.
