San Francisco Giants Need Series Over Hated Dodgers To Keep Heat On Padres

RANT It!

[picappgallerysingle id="9502690"]The San Francisco Giants once again have clawed their way back into a fight for the National League West pennant. The Giants had fallen into a mini slump that had them all, but fighting for the Wild Card. However, baseball is a long season. The San Diego Padres find themselves in a seven game slide that has seen the Giants pick up the four games needed to make this a race. This turn of events is about time. The Padres seemed to get every break in this Cinderella season for San Diego. Their pitching is struggling and they cannot seem to come up with the timely hit. Welcome to the Giants season at times Padres’ fans.

The Padres slide comes as the Giants have gotten themselves back on track. The Giants pitching has rebounded. Cain, Bumgarner, Sanchez and Lincecum all seem to be pitching well. This means the Giants are back to Giants baseball with great starting pitching setting the tone.  The Giants also have found a lineup that can hit. The team is no longer relying on Aubrey Huff, Andres Torres, and Buster Posey to the damage. Pickups like Pat Burrell, Cody Ross, and Jose Guillen have brought depth to this lineup. The struggling for the season Pablo Sandoval appears to be mentally in the game and hitting like he did in 09. The result is the team is 5 and 4 in its’ last nine games after going 3 and 6 in the previous nine games.  Had the Giants not taken this long to get going, the team might be tied for first.

Make no mistake about it, this series is huge for the Giants. The team needs to vanquish the Dodgers. The team needs this series to keep the heat on San Diego. If the Giants can cut the lead to one or two games by the time they play the Padres later this month in a pivotal four game swing, then the Padres will be in trouble. Momentum will firmly be in the San Francisco Giants corner. However, standing in the Giants way are the hated Dodgers. The Dodgers would love nothing more than to spoil the team’s playoff chances. The promise land is once again behind the wretched Dodgers.

The Giants need Barry Zito to come alive and take game one. The struggling Zito is the only Giants starter that has not shown signs of life in a while. Zito needs to find the life in his curveball and the command of the strike zone that had him finally living up to the expectations of the ridiculous contract that he signed.      A win tonight against LA to set the tone for a series win, would go a long way to getting his season on track. Should he help pitch the team into the post season, maybe that contract is not so ridiculous……Remember Barry, Beat LA! Beat LA! Beat LA!
