The Atlanta Braves defeated the San Francisco Giants 5-2. The primary factor in how the game turned out was the difference in performance between the day’s starters.

The game was expected to be a pitching duel between Tim Lincecum and Tim Hudson, but it did not quite turn out that way.

Hudson turned in a very strong performance.

The same could not be said for Lincecum, who struggled with his control.

In fact, the Giants ace walked a career-high six batters, and unlike yesterday, no blame could be placed on the home plate umpire.

Six turned out to be something of a significant number for Lincecum today; in addition to the six walks, he also gave up six hits and struck out six batters. Plus, the sixth was the last inning he completed.

Now for how the game unfolded…

The Giants actually scored the first run of the game.

In the second inning, Pat Burrell doubled and came home on a single by Cody Ross.

This gave Ross his first hit and RBI of the season. Remember, Ross only recently came off the disabled list.

The Braves got that run back in the very next half-inning.

Martin Prado singled home Nate McLouth, also on board via the base hit.

Atlanta took the lead in the fifth.

Again, Prado singled to drive in McLouth, but this time the latter had walked.

The Braves put the game out of reach with three runs in the seventh.

Alex Gonzalez led off with a double, which was followed by another walk to McLouth and a sacrifice bunt by Hudson.

Then, Gonzalez scored on a failed fielder’s choice.

After a walk to Jason Heyward, Lincecum was replaced with Javier Lopez.

With two outs, Lopez surrendered a single to Brian McCann that scored Prado.

The Giants did threaten in the ninth.

Burrell led off with a double. Ross followed with a single to move Burrell to third.

A sacrifice fly by Miguel Tejada brought Burrell home.

However, the next two batters — pinch-hitters Nate Schierholtz and Buster Posey — both got out, ending the game.

The series concludes tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. PDT.

Probable Pitchers: Jonathan Sanchez (2-1, 3.13) vs. Brandon Beachy (1-1, 3.86)
