San Francisco Giants Fall to Atlanta Braves in Ten Innings

The Atlanta Braves beat the San Francisco Giants 9-6 in ten innings at AT&T Park to complete the sweep.

The Braves wasted no time at all, scoring two runs in the top of the first as the first three batters all reached base.

Martin Prado led off with a walk, which was followed by back-to-back doubles by Jason Heyward and Chipper Jones.

Jones’s hit became a ground-rule double due to fan interference, so the offender was removed from the game.

As in the first two games of the series, Braves pitching got off to a strong start.

Atlanta starter Brandon Beachy, whom none of the Giants have ever faced, retired the first 10 batters he faced.

His streak ended in the fourth on a two-out double by Aubrey Huff that was nearly a home run.

That hit was followed by a two-run shot by Buster Posey to tie the game.

The Braves later took back the lead with three runs in the seventh, all on a  a blast by Heyward.

Heyward has had two at-bats against reliever Jeremy Affeldt, and both times, he has hit a homer.

The lead shifted to the Giants in the bottom of the frame as San Francisco scored four times.

With one out, Pablo Sandoval, Pat Burrell and Cody Ross all singled to load the bases.

A walk to Miguel Tejada forced in a run. Then, Burrell came home on a ground out by pinch-hitter Nate Schierholtz.

Finally, Aaron Rowand doubled to drive in Ross and Tejada.

It was Rowand’s first hit of the series.

A solo shot by Dan Uggla leading off the eighth against Sergio Romo tied the game once more.

The game remained tied through the ninth, sending the game to extra innings.

Brian Wilson, who retired all three batters in the ninth, stayed on to pitch the tenth.

However, the results this time around were markedly different.

The first three batters all reached as Heyward and Jones singled and Uggla walked.

After a strikeout to Freddie Freeman, Wilson battled pinch-hitter Eric Hinske for eight pitches.

Wilson won out thanks to the fielding of Huff and Posey.

Hinske hit a grounder to Huff, who alertly threw home, and Posey made a great stretch to catch the ball and keep his foot on the plate to retire a sliding Heyward.

The Giants announcers were very impressed with the play:

“What a play by Aubrey Huff.”

“There was nothing easy at all about that play.”

“Excellent stretch by Posey.”

But it turned out to be for naught as Nate McLouth came up next with a single to bring home Jones and Uggla.

Then, Wilson was replaced by Dan Runzler who gave up a run-scoring base hit to the first batter he faced as Brian McCann drove in Hinske.

In the bottom of the tenth, Huff singled, but Rowand, Freddy Sanchez and Posey all got out, ending the game.

The last time Atlanta swept San Francisco was 1998.

The Giants travel to Pittsburgh tomorrow and will take on the Pirates 4:05 p.m. PDT Tuesday.

Probable Pitchers: Matt Cain (2-1, 3.42) vs. Charlie Morton (2-1, 3.33)
