Five-Run 12th Gives San Francisco Giants Comeback Win over Padres

The San Francisco Giants entered the ninth inning losing 1-0 to the San Diego Padres but wound up winning the game 6-2 in 12 innings.

The Padres got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the third.

Madison Bumgarner retired the first two batters of the frame before giving up three straight singles to Chris Denorfia, Jason Bartlett and Chase Headley. Headley’s  hit knocked in Denorfia.

That one run looked to be enough for San Diego starter Aaron Harang, who cruised through seven innings.

He allowed just five hits and one walk while fanning four.

And it could have made a hard-luck loser out of Madison Bumgarner.

He gave up just the one run on seven singles, zero walks and four strikeouts in six solid innings.

Harang would have been the winner and Bumgarner the loser if not for Aubrey Huff.

Leading off, Huff homered off the Padres’ all-star closer, Heath Bell.

The score stayed tied through nine, sending the game to extra innings. And it remained knotted at 1-1 until the 12th inning.

The Giants sent 10 men to the plate and scored five times.

They opened the inning with back-to-back walks by Cody Ross and Brandon Crawford.

Ross was replaced by Emmanuel Burriss, who stole second base with Crawford up.

Next up was Eli Whiteside, who laid down a sacrifice bunt. However, it resulted in bases loaded and nobody out because of an error by pitcher Luke Gregerson.

The Giants almost gave up the gift rally.

Miguel Tejada fouled out and Andres Torres struck out, leaving the runners in place.

But all five runs in the inning came with two outs.

The tiebreaker came on another gift from Gregerson. He walked Mike Fontenot to push Burriss across the plate.

Then, three straight singles by Pablo Sandoval, Nate Schierholtz and Huff cashed in more runs. Sandoval drove in Crawford and Whiteside. Schierholtz knocked in Fontenot. Huff brought Sandoval home.

The Padres threatened in their half of the inning.

Singles by Cameron Maybin and Orlando Hudson and a walk to Rob Johnson loaded the bases with one out.

At that point, Brian Wilson was brought in to relieve Javier Lopez, who started the inning.

He gave up a sacrifice fly to Will Venable, the first batter he faced. Venable had not entered the game until the ninth inning.

Wilson then walked Denorfia — again, bases loaded. But the closer got out of it by getting Jason Bartlett to hit a ground ball back to him.

The four-game series continues tomorrow at 7:05 p.m.

Probable Pitchers: Tim Lincecum (7-7, 3.06) vs. Dustin Moseley (2-8, 3.21)
