San Francisco Giants Again Score Six to Beat San Diego Padres
Like yesterday, the San Francisco Giants scored six times on their way to beating the San Diego Padres, but this win came in decidedly different fashion.
Last night, the Giants did not score until the ninth inning and needed extra innings to win. They did not even get to six until scoring five in the twelfth and final frame.
Tonight, San Francisco scored in the first, second, fifth and seventh innings, winning easily.
Back-to-back hits by Andres Torres and Mike Fontenot opened the game. Then, a sacrifice fly by Pablo Sandoval cashed in Torres to put the Giants on the board.
They extended the lead to two when Cody Ross led off the second with his seventh home run of the year.
Wildness by Tim Lincecum let the Padres get close in the fourth.
First, he walked Alberto Gonzalez to open the inning. He followed that by uncorking two wild pitches that allowed Gonzalez to advance to second, then third. Gonzalez scored on a groundout by Orlando Hudson.
Lincecum also gave up a hit to Cameron Maybin and a walk to Anthony Rizzo but was able to avoid any more damage.
The Giants began to pull away with two runs in the fifth.
Chris Stewart led off with a double. He advanced to third on a well-executed bunt by Lincecum and scored on a Torres single.
Torres stole second and went to third on a base hit by Mike Fontenot.
Then, Fontenot tried to steal second but was thrown out. While this was happening, however, Torres was able to score easily.
The Giants really put the game away with two final runs in the seventh.
Two straight doubles by Aaron Rowand and Torres accounted for the first run before an out was made.
After Fontenot struck out, Padres reliever Ernesto Frieri pitched around Sandoval before purposely throwing the 3-0 pitch wide to put him on.
A Nate Schierholtz grounder put runners at second and third. With first base open, the Padres opted to intentionally walk Aubrey Huff outright.
The move backfired, however, as Frieri promptly threw a wild pitch with Ross at the plate, allowing Torres to come home.
Lincecum got the win. In six innings, he allowed three hits, three walks and one run and struck out seven. He also threw three wild pitches.
Sandoval’s hitting streak ended at 22 games as he went 0-for-2 with a sac fly, RBI and two walks.
Torres, Fontenot and Stewart all had multi-hit games. Torres notched three hits with the others getting two apiece.
Hector Sanchez made his major-league debut as a pinch-hitter in the ninth. Batting for Sergio Romo, he got walked.
He did not play in the field, but he is a catcher by trade.
Also making his big league debut was the Padres’ Luis Martinez. Like Sanchez, he is a catcher who got into the game as a pinch-hitter. However, he also got to play behind the plate.
The series continues 5:35 p.m. PT tomorrow at PETCO Park.
Probable Pitchers: Barry Zito (3-1, 3.18) vs. Cory Luebke (2-3, 2.57)
