Matt Cain, SF Giants Again Beat Cole Hamels, Phillies
The San Francisco Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies in a rematch of Game 3 of the 2010 NLCS, which also saw Matt Cain defeat Cole Hamels.
Then, the final score was 3-0; this time, it was 2-1.
In Game 3 of the NLCS, Cain went seven innings, allowing two hits and no runs. He also hit two batters, walked three and struck out five.
Last night, he again lasted seven strong, now allowing four hits and one unearned run. He walked and fanned one each.
The Giants first got on the board in the third.
Eli Whiteside hit a one-out single. With two outs, Aaron Rowand tripled him home.

San Francisco added the difference-maker in the seventh, though they did miss out on a prime opportunity to score more.
The first four batters reached via a walk, hit by pitch and two doubles.
Jeff Keppinger led off with a double. Cody Ross walked. Then, Nate Schierholtz roped a double to right to drive in Keppinger.

The next batter up, Whiteside, got plunked to load the bases with no outs.
The Giants failed to capitalize, however, as Cain popped out and Rowand grounded into a double play.
But that one extra run was enough as the Phillies scored their only run in the bottom of the seventh.
Leading off, Shane Victorino reached second on an error that was wrongly charged to Whiteside.
He hit a pop-up on the first-base side of the infield in fair territory. It would have been a routine catch for Whiteside had Cain not run over and collided with his catcher in an ill-conceived attempt to make the grab himself. The ball dropped between them and rolled into foul ground, allowing Victorino to race to second.

The error originally went to Cain, at least according to ESPN’s Dave O’Brien, but the box score now shows the error was given to Whiteside.
Victorino came in on a single by Domonic Brown.
Four of the Giants’ six hits went for extra bases. In addition to Rowand’s triple and the doubles by Keppinger and Schierholtz, Aubrey Huff also hit a two-bagger.
The series concludes tonight at 4:05 p.m. PDT.
Probable Pitchers: Tim Lincecum (8-8, 2.90) OR Ryan Vogelsong (8-1, 2.10) vs. Kyle Kendrick (5-4, 3.45)
Who goes for the Giants depends on whether or not Lincecum has recovered from the stomach illness that has kept him from pitching either of the past two games.
The contest could also feature the Giants’ debut of Carlos Beltran.
