San Francisco Giants catcher Chris Stewart hit his first major league home run in tonight’s 6-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Stewart has been a professional ballplayer since 2002, when he played 42 games of rookie ball for the Chicago White Sox.

He made his major league debut with the Sox four years later, on Sept. 6, 2006.

He has spent time in the Sox, Texas Rangers, New York Yankees, San Diego Padres and Giants organizations.

Overall, he has played 717 games in the minors and 67 games in the majors. He has 31 minor league long balls but none in the majors prior to tonight.

Tonight, he was responsible for what Giants announcer Dave Fleming called one of his favorite moments of the season.

The shot came on the first pitch of the fifth inning, a 93-mph four-seam fastball from starter James McDonald.

When Stewart came back to the dugout, he was greeted by an overjoyed Guillermo Mota, who was waiting at the top of the steps with a big grin and arms outstretched for a double-high five.

Behind Mota was a crowd of Giants waiting to congratulate Stewart and offer hugs, high fives and smiles.

Stewart is batting. 223 with one home run and six RBIs this season. He is batting .310 over his past 10 games.
