Officially Grading the Carlos Beltran Trade for the San Francisco Giants

It’s been over a month since the San Francisco Giants traded for OF Carlos Beltran at the deadline. I was very critical of that trade then…and I’m officially going to grade it now. Be prepared Giants fans…you might be upset with me.

I’m giving the San Francisco Giants an official grade of….F.

Why Brett? Why would you do that? It’s simple. Beltran has gotten hurt (not a surprise), and is more or less a non factor in the middle of a bad line up. Seeing as they traded for him to provide stability in a bad lineup- not doing that has cost the Giants. When Tim Linecum has what…12 losses with an ERA under 3.30- that’s a problem. That’s one reason.

Another reason is he won’t be resigned. The fact that he’s a two month rental- it was insanely important that Beltran come over and hit to get the Giants to the postseason. He’s failed- and frankly…I don’t think Arizona blows it’s lead. Not when Daniel Hudson and Ian Kennedy have pitched as well as they’ve had this year.

The third reason? They traded their best pitching prospect. This is going to go down as one of the worst deals GM Brian Sabean has made. Dealing top prospect Zach Wheeler- whom some scouts have said has the best stuff in the entire minor leagues, for a two month, injury plauged rent-an-outfielder. I still have no idea why they made the trade. Even now. The fact that all my predictions came true? Has to be a scary feeling for the defending champs on the verge of getting bounced prior to October. They should have moved on Hunter Pence using Wheeler- at least he wouldn’t be a rental.

This trade could go down as one of the worst trades in recent memory for the San Francisco Giants and that’s why they receive an F.

7 Rants to “Officially Grading the Carlos Beltran Trade for th...”

  1. Sabeansuks says:

    Agree with all your arguments.

One other thing to consider, Beltran has always lacked the energy to take a leadership role. This was evident when we hit Victorino during the Phillies series.

We hit him during top of 6th…with our bats coming up on bottom of 6th..
Now, drilling him is alright. Maybe it’s a bad sportsmanship, but it’s part of the game that may have been something to charge our players.

    But what was Beltran’s excuse?
“Rollins shouldn’t have been stealing up 6?”
My gosh, did he expect the Phillies to stop playing the game with almost a half game left?
Even if it was the 9th inning, you should do your best to score and win the game.
I couldn’t believe that Beltran gave up on the game at that point.

    A loser’s mentality breeds losers.
Beltran’s a talented player, but he’s got a loser’s mentality to drag down the Giants, just as he’s done for years with the Mets.

Big fat F on the trade.

    • Brett Rosin says:

Not everyone can be a leader, and I don’t think the Giants got Beltran to lead…they got him to hit…in which he’s failed.

Baseball players have turned into a ton of babies truthfully. The game has stopped letting players police themselves and frankly- 6 runs down in the 5th? That’s two blasts from being a game…as long as the stolen base was done in good taste…there’s nothing wrong with it. 6 runs isn’t an insurmountable lead so I agree with you.

      • Sabeansuks says:

The way I see it is this..
Last year, Phillies were a better regular season team..
We were underdogs against the Phillies and the Rangers..
But one of the biggest reasons why we earned the championship is because we didn’t give up or play without energy..

We had that sense that we could always come back..or win the game..
We also had the killer instinct..
The way I see it..major injuries or not…we lost that edge..

Look, that game..which I thought everything was fine besides Beltran’s comments..was played as it should have..Two teams fighting it out..trying to win..That’s why I actually liked drilling Victorino..show some fight..
As for the Phillies..they did a good job..they had the killer instinct..
They always talk about how the Giants are a dangerous team with a dominant pitching staff..If anything, Phillies were respecting their opponent..they were respecting the game and trying to play hard until the game was over..
You should do that with any opponent you face in the major league..

What upset me with that game wasn’t the final score..
It was the realization that our mental state may be wrong..
The “magic” being gone isn’t just from major injuries but we lost our mental edge as well..We were still winning before the trade..and now we are practically eliminated..I can’t blame Beltran only…And yes, he isn’t expect to be the captain of the team…but I was hoping his hitting may wake up other players..and I wanted to at least see some fire in him..
He’s the big name on the hitting roster..reporters were bound to talk to him..show some fire!!!

By the way, you think with all the game he’s missed as a Met and with the Giants so far…I wouldn’t be surprised if some of those situations he could have played..It’s a long season..everyone is bit worn out..but if your head is not in the game, then your worn out body will feel more like it’s unable to go.

        • Brett Rosin says:

          Well said.

I rarely have a problem with hitting a guy if the pitcher believes his team was disrespected in any way…or the game of baseball was disrespected. I had no problem with Vic getting punked- because it was in a safe zone. He didn’t get hit in the head area…and that’s part of teh game. I like a pitcher that says hey- I’ll protect my teammates even if I have to be wrong…which he was…but again..to me…that’s part of the game. Now if you look at what Zambrano did against Jones- that wasn’t called for and I hate it…so there’s a major difference.

I mean- the Giants still have a nasty rotation. But you don’t trade your best pitching prospect for a guy like Beltran…a 2 month injury plagued old prospect. I mean…at least trade him for a guy you’l have for awhile…like pence. either way- I don’t get to see a whole lot of Giants games…so I can’t say for 100% certainty that ther’es a lack of energy or lack of belief you’ll win the game….but seeing as you seem to know what you’re talking about…I’m going to go with you on this one.

  2. David says:

If so, then is Brian Sabean to be held accountable?

    • Brett Rosin says:

absolutely he’s held accountable barring it was his boss who forced the move.

Enough to be fired? No. He did win a WS last year. However- this trade will go into his bag of bad moves instead of the good moves bag and eventually will play against him.

  3. Norma Jean Hill says:

I agree that they can send both BELTRAN AND CABRELLO BACK WHERE THEY CAME FROM. THEY HAVEN’T helped the GIANTS ONE BIT.
