San Jose has all the ammunition in their talent in order to have taken down the St. Louis Blues but numerous of their star players were completely absent for their team in round one of the playoffs.

27-year old Joe Pavelski is one of these players. Even though Pavelski was just nominated by his teammates for the King Clancy Award for his leadership skills on and off the ice, he had zero points in five games of round one of the playoffs.

The young star was a big part of the team’s offense during the regular season and was expected of nothing less. He was tied with other young gun Logan Couture for most goals on the team with 31. Although Pavelski wasn’t the only player falling short for San Jose.

Patrick Marleau scored one goal less than Pavelski and Couture during the regular season but also scored no points during this playoff series.

If these two Sharks were able to perform even slightly under their average regular season performance then one or two more goals could have been scored between the two stars and the series could be continuing or ending in San Jose’s favor.

Instead they Sharks are done for the season after another close loss. The Blues scored two quick goals to give them a one-goal lead that remained during the rest of the game until the Sharks pulled goaltender Antti Niemi and were scored on by the Blues’ Andy McDonald.

The Sharks games three and four were lost by only one goal and they were shutout in game two of the five game series.

Lack of offense is what killed the Sharks dreams of hosting the Stanley Cup this year and it was most noticeable with a couple of their reliable forwards being absent on the scoreboard.

The Sharks were outscored 8-14 by one of the lowest scoring regular seasons teams in the NHL and will now be heading home for the season. They fought hard and came close numerous times during their hunt for the cup but unfortunately for San Jose close only matters in horseshoes and grenades.
