Two national championships in three years at Alabama reaped Nick Saban an extension and nearly immortalized his name at a Montgomery high school.

As for the money, the former LSU and Miami Dolphins head coach becomes the highest-paid coach in the country in 2012 at $5.3 million. He’d previously trailed Mack Brown at Texas in that arms race.

The Crimson Tide administration were undoubtedly swayed to boost his pay by the inane message board rumor that had the Longhorns set to offer Saban $10 million on Brown’s exit.

The 60 year-old Saban’s deal runs through the 2019 season, a fall in which he’ll make almost $6 million. In 2013, he gets a $50,000 raise and each year following, the raise amounts to $100,000.

He’s the best coach in college football and at these numbers, not even remotely overpaid. 55 wins against just 12 losses and two national titles beg anyone to speak otherwise.

Recruiting is more selecting than pursuing and the sheer tenacity of his defenses tend to lead many to believe that quarterbacks in the SEC are sub-par. Perhaps there’s some merit there but Saban’s units go a long way toward provoking the thought.

As for the high school story, New Park High in Montgomery, Alabama asked for suggestions on for the campus moniker. The one that drew the most interest of course was “Nick Saban High School” but sadly, this was rejected.

While appreciative of the foresight from the New Park principal in not tying himself to a college football mercenary, the fallout of choosing Saban High then watching him take a job in the NFL would have made for enjoyable reading.

Montgomery is also about 60 miles from Auburn University so the only thing worse for the Tigers faithful than having Saban’s name attached to an area recruiting battleground would be Harvey Updyke named school counselor.
