David Beckham Close to Contract Extension

David Beckham is reported to be close to a one-year extension that would keep him in Los Angeles and the MLS.

The Galaxy star is in his first full season in the MLS, others being cut short thanks to injury and loans, and is reaping the benefits. Becks ranks amongst the league leaders in assists and LA has won the Supporter’s Shield, went unbeaten at home, and will be favorites to win the MLS Cup.

As a result, Beckham and LA are in negotiations to keep him around for a repeat performance. Part of the reason for Beckham staying around is to keep his family in the Los Angeles area.

This comes despite heavy interest in bringing Beckham back to Europe. Queens Park Rangers and Tottenham of the English Premier League have expressed interest as has Paris Saint-Germain of France.

Beckham came to the MLS from Real Madrid in 2007 on a 5 year deal worth an estimated $250 million. His arrival brought a rise in interest in soccer in the USA and the MLS and has led to other stars such as Thierry Henry crossing the Atlantic.
