Los Angeles Galaxy and USA defender Omar Gonzalez tore his ACL in his first training session with Nuremberg, who he had just joined on loan.
Gonzalez, the 2011 MLS Defender of the Year, collided with fellow American Timmy Chandler, causing the injury. He will return to Los Angeles for surgery and treatment and will miss most, if not all, of the upcoming MLS season.
Gonzalez, 23, has two caps for Team USA, and is largely viewed as the best young center defender the US has. Prior to his loan to Nuremberg he was in training camp with the national team in advance of upcoming friendlies with Venezuela and Panama.
Gonzalez helped the Galaxy win the 2011 regular season and playoff championships.
