Who Should Be England’s New Captain?
GEPA/US PRESSWIRE

This has not been a good run as of late for English football. Shrouded in controversy, the FA has limped through the last twelve months, along the way losing support, confidence, and credibility in the eyes of both fans and players.

The dark cloud above the British Isles just got a bit darker, as the FA has ruled that John Terry will be stripped of his captaincy of England’s national team because of his looming racial abuse fiasco. The 31-year-old Chelsea defender is due to stand trial in July over allegations following an incident with QPR’s Anton Ferdinand.

According to the BBC report, the FA announced that “this decision has been taken due to the higher profile nature of the England captaincy, on and off the pitch, and the additional demands and requirements expected of the captain leading into and during a tournament [the European Championship].”

Sports minister Hugh Robertson backed the reasoning of the FA, saying it would have been “impossible” for Terry to continue, adding: “I completely support the FA’s decision. It would have been impossible for John Terry to have continued as captain with this charge over his head.”

So much for innocent until proven guilty.

The question that now remains (the most pressing one among many, I should say) is who will take the now-vacant spot, since Rio Ferdinand, the Manchester United defender who was made captain last time John Terry was demoted (see a pattern developing here?), reportedly will not do so again.

Who do you think Capello should pick?
