SUNDERLAND, UK – If Thierry Henry’s goal in stoppage time at Sunderland was his last act as a Arsenal Gunner, then “King Henry” could not have done it in a more dramatic fashion.

Henry, on loan from the MLS New York Red Bulls, would score a game-winning goal in stoppage time to lift Arsenal past Sunderland, 2-1 —and thanks to a 2-0 Chelsea loss to Everton—back into the top four on the Barclays Premiership table.

Down 1-0, courtesy of a James McClean goal in the 70’ minute for Sunderland, Arsenal would score on a equalizer from Aaron Ramsey at the 75’ minute.

Henry, Arsenal’s all-time leading scorer with 228 goals, would score the game-winner on a cross from Andrey Arshavin on a right-footed shot, beating Black Cats goalie Kieren Westwood.

Before being acquired by his former club on loan, Arsenal would honor the French striker with a bronze statute outside Emirates Stadium.

Henry would play for the Gunners from 1999 to 2007 before transferring to FC Barcelona for a fee of 24 million euros.

Henry would go on to win a UEFA Champions League title and UEFA Super Cup with FC Barcelona before signing with the Red Bulls in 2010.

In four appearances for the Gunners, he has scored two goals—including a memorable goal in the FA Cup vs Leeds United in his return.

Henry is set to return to New York after Arsenal’s first leg against AC Milan in the Champions League on the 15th.

One cannot ask for a better way to leave or exit, and in the case of Henry, he added to his own legend that will forever be etched in Gunners lore.
