Real Madrid To Open $135 Million Theme Park in United Arab Emirates

There is little doubt that Spanish soccer club Real Madrid is one of the world’s most famous, and well-known, with a rabid fan base that will do anything for their team.

Real Madrid is hedging their bets this time around by opening a $135 million, “Disney-style” theme park to reportedly be built on the Al Majran Island resort located in the United Arab Emirates.

The park, to be named “Real Madrid Resort Island”, will be a shrine to the team which developers in the UAE hope will draw club fans from around the world to the island which has quickly become one of the world’s most expensive and lavish tourist destinations.

Selectproperty.com had one of the first reports on the proposed theme park, and noted:

Many believe that the park’s suggested name indicates it will be located on emirate’s famous man-made island, The Al Marjan Island, which has been created exclusively to become one of the most prominent tourism hot spots in the region; something a theme park of this scale would significantly boost.

It’s a logical extension of a brand that knows few competitors, but will the risk equal a substantial reward?

Is a branded resort like the one proposed here enough of a draw for tourists who also happen to be team fans to choose it over another similar destination?

If the resort fails, will the damage done to the bottom line of Real Madrid’s finances be a tough hurdle to overcome, causing ripples through the organization which could affect the team’s performance on the field?

These are all hypotheticals as is always the case when any new venture is embarked upon.

We’ll all find out soon enough just how much brand cache the Real Madrid name and marks truly have.
