Today a young Welsh student, 21-year-old Liam Stacey from Pontypridd, was sentenced to 56 days in jail following racially abusive messages on Twitter directed at suffering soccer star Fabrice Muamba.

The Swansea University student –at least, he was: he has been suspended by the institution and they have distanced themselves from Stacey –reportedly sent out a message saying: “LOL. **** Muamba. He’s dead!!!”

Thankfully other Twitter users recorded his comments and reported Stacey to the appropriate authorities. He then responded to being criticized by other Twitter users by sending abuse to some of those that directly challenged him, sometimes using racist terminology.

There has been a recent spate of racial comments being reported by users of Twitter, with regards to English Premier League soccer. Many were sent out following the incident involving Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra, of Liverpool and Manchester United respectively. Prominent radio and television presenter, and former Premier League striker, Stan Collymore has been leading attempts to report as many users inciting hate through social networking sites as possible.

Many of those cases have been reported and are awaiting due process. However, some try to evade the issue by attempting to delete the evidence. The court heard today about how Stacey himself tried to delete messages and then attempted to delete his account.

Stacey later told the authorities that he had been drinking all day when he had Tweeted the offensive messages, however it could be suggested that by attempting to delete any proof he demonstrated that he was perfectly aware of how wrong his actions were. He has been sentenced to a custodial stay as well as being ordered to avoid social networking sites.

Bolton, meanwhile, are preparing for an emotional return to White Hart Lane, the site of Muamba’s cardiac arrest, in order to replay the postponed FA Cup fixture. That match takes place today.
