When one starts a comment with the preface “It’s going to be a little unpopular to say this…”, then one might want to rethink continuing one’s statement.
Unfortunately for Simon Borg, Major League Soccer’s ExtraTime Radio Editorial Staff member, he didn’t heed such advice. On Monday he felt the urge to wax misogynist about women who have the gall, the utter audacity, to like soccer (gasp!), saying: “It’s fine if you’re a female and you want to be a super-fan. Clearly go for it, that’s your choice. But there is something to be said for how appealing that might be to the other sex. Having a woman that’s such a fan, like painting your face, tuning in to every podcast… I don’t know how many males would be into that.”
Okay two points (among several possible others) jump to mind.
One, pretty much every “male” I know would be incredibly into that.
Two, believe it or not, Simon, but some women do things for reasons other than pleasing men. Strange to imagine, I know, but maybe, just maybe (you may say that I’m a dreamer…) women actually like the game of soccer, and want to partake in the action as fans. Maybe they don’t give a shit about turning you on. Maybe they don’t care what you think, at all. I know I don’t.
Of course, the irony of statements like these (which, rightly, Borg has since been suspended for), is that the MLS needs all the fans it can get. Alienating any of them is not only offensive from a fan and feminist standpoint, but it’s also ridiculously stupid from a business standpoint. It is, in a word, dumb.
Anyway, I hope Mr. Borg takes the little vacation he earned to read The Second Sex. Although, many “females” are not that into men who read, so strike that; he might want to discard any activities that might not be appealing to other potential sex partners. Wouldn’t want to turn anybody off.
