Former Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas may have only just come into power at Tottenham Hotspur, replacing the ever popular Harry Redknapp, but reports suggest he has wasted no time in getting involved in the transfer market.
It has been widely suggested that Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen, a partner at centre-back for Belgium alongside Vincent Kompany, is close to completing a switch to Spurs, for just £9m. This could be to compensate for the supposed selling of veteran William Gallas and the potential retirement of Ledley King.
On top of this, rumors abound that midfield playmaker Luka Modric is to be sold by AVB to Real Madrid, for a fee in the region of £30m. Should this take place then the new boss will have a task convincing players like Rafael Van der Vaart to stay at White Hart Lane.
Gareth Bale had already been tied to a new contract, but Villas-Boas has been said to have informed striker Jermaine Defoe that he is going nowhere, while probing offers have been sent to the employers of players like France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, Italian goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano and Brazilian pair Oscar and Leandro Damiao (both of Internacional).
AVB appears keen to put his stamp on Spurs and to completely rebrand the side, much like he attempted to do at Chelsea. There will still be major decisions to make with his back four needing reorganized and full backs coming in for analysis. He wants a new goalkeeper but the fans will undoubtedly want a new, prolific striker to spearhead their attack.
Expect many more soccer rumors to come out about Spurs as the new season approaches.
